Read the label
The care label is the best guide. “Dry clean only” usually means the lining, interlining or face fabric will shrink at different rates in water.
Lined and heavy curtains
Lined, interlined, velvet and blackout curtains are almost always safer dry cleaned. Washing can leave hems uneven and linings hanging below the face fabric.
Voiles and nets
Most sheer curtains can be washed on a gentle cycle and hung back up while slightly damp to drop out creases.
Taking them down
Remove hooks and weights, note which curtain goes where, and give them a shake outside to remove loose dust before you bring them in.
